All work and no play make Jack a dull boy, so goes the adage. Apex College, one of the best private schools in Dansoman, Accra, planned a tour of Mount Afadza and Wli falls, all in the Volta Region of Ghana. The trip was to take place on 1st July, 2016 which fell on a public holiday.
Two days before the D-day, the school authorities were advised that since it was a rainy season, the weather at Wli would be unstable and therefore, it would not be advisable to go on the trip. This explanation was given to the students and for that matter the trip was postponed.
The postponement did not go down well with the students. While not disputing the reasons for the postponement, some of them were distraught and visibly disappointed. Apparently, some of the students had carefully prepared for the trip. They had planned what to wear, what to eat and just ready to have fun. Some had gone to town to buy items like travelling bags and snickers with which they were going to travel on the trip. They had planned the dishes they were going to prepare and how the dishes were going to be dished out. The postponement was therefore a big blow to them.
One of the first year students, who pleaded anonymity, confessed that “I nearly died. I have never been so disappointed in school.” She had skipped class on the day the announcement was made, which was two days before the day to prepare for the trip. She had gone to town to buy the rest of the items she needed.
Other students too were happy the trip was postponed though they could not express it openly. These were students who, for one reason or the other, could not have gone with the rest of their mates if the programme was not postponed.
The excursion has since been rescheduled for the first term of the next academic year, most probably in October or November.
