On Wednesday, the 29th of
June, 2016, at the University of Ghana Business School auditorium, Adisadel
College in Cape Coast emerged the winners of the now prestigious National
Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) competition for the first time ever.
They emerged winners after beating Opoku Ware School from Kumasi and Mfantsipim School from Cape Coast. In all, there were 136 schools from all the ten regions of Ghana competing for the first spot. Of the 136 competing schools, 27 of them, described as seeded schools, by virtue of having qualified to the quarter final stage in the 2015 edition of the competition did not compete at the preliminary stage. As a result, only 109 schools competed at the preliminary stage, organized across the country in January and February 2016.
After 76 contests, Adisadel College emerged the winner with 44 points, followed by Opoku Ware with 38 points and Mfantsipim School with 37 points.
In the course of the competition, 81 schools progressed to the one-eighth stage. They were made up of the seeded schools from the 2015 edition and 54 schools from the 2016 preliminary stage.
At the one-eighth stage, 27 schools made it to the quarter finals. There was a stiff competition at this stage of the competition like all the other stages with each school trying to do their best.
The schools which competed at the semi-final stage included Ghana National College in Cape Coast, Mfantsimpim School also in Cape Coast and St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School in Accra. The rest were Accra Academy, Kumasi Secondary Technical School, Adisadel College, Kumasi High School, Opoku Ware School and St. Hubert Mission Seminary School.
