An
educationist, Emmanuel Opoku Mensah has criticised the structure of 2018 Basic
Education Certificate Examination (BECE) English language paper.
According
to him, the introduction of new literature books just few months to the exams
could impact negatively on pupils' performances in the upcoming BECE.
Mr. Opoku
Mensah who is also the head of research at the Micjoy Advertising disclosed
this at its 2018 African Quality Awards held at the Golden Tulip, Kumasi.
Citing a
publication by the educationghana.net with the headline: 'No
selected Text for the Cock Crow in BECE 2018; Candidates are to Prepare for all
texts' where to butress his point, Mr. Opoku Mensah maintained the forcing
students to learn all the texts in the literature book could spell doom.
At best,
the researcher suggested the students be given specific chapters of the books
which include: COCKCROW, OLIVER TWIST and Ama Ata Aidoo's drama, THE
DILEMMA OF A GHOST to enable them pass the exams.
Mr Opoku
Mensah appealed passionately to the Deputy Minister of the Education, Dr Yaw
Osei Adutwum and the Chairman of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Council,
Kenneth Nsowah to intervene.
However,
the GES Council Chairman disagreed with him insisting that selecting some of
the texts for examination purposes is not the best.
